Each of these pottery lamps was fabricated by Beaumont Mood in the basement studio of the home he shared with his wife, Martha Mood, in San Antonio, Texas. The designs were Martha's, but Beaumont "streamlined" them. The holes were hand-pierced with a wooden dowel; Beaumont was able to make four of them a day. The lamps were commissioned by O'Neil Ford, in 1965. The budget allowed for the making of the lamps was $2,000. They reside in a cabinet at the Emily Fowler Central Library. The containers were commissioned by O'Neil Ford as part of the 1968 renovation of the library. Beaumont Mood was the owner of the Beaumont Mood Lighting Company in San Antonio, Texas. From 1969 until the early 1980s, customers were allowed to smoke in the library and this was originally used as an ashtray in the building. Their condition: dark marks, smudges, and some small chipping on the top band. Property stickers are on the lowest band of each. The pieces were collected and stored in the Special Collections Department. In 2022, Preservation Specialist Alayna Jordan, with Ford Powell & Carson Architects, gave a pottery cleaning demonstration at the Emily Fowler Library to show city staff how to clean the Beaumont Mood pottery in the Municipal Complex. Ford also commissioned the pergola. In 2020, the library experienced some vandalism, and two lights were shattered. The remainder were removed and placed in storage for their protection.
