Municipal Swimming Pool
The Denton Municipal Swimming Pool and Bath House were designed by Texas Architect, O'Neil Ford, for the City of Denton.
The Municipal Pool was constructed by the Pneumatic Cement Gun Co. of Waco. The "U" shaped Olympic-sized swimming pool was surrounded by a cedar fence while the bathhouse was roofless and made of redwood.
Dedication ceremonies were scheduled for the evening of May 15, 1965, however, the festivities were canceled when a storm blew in.
The pool officially opened on May 1, 1966, and an "aqua show" was held at 7:30 p.m. on May 15 that featured "synchronized swimming, dancers and bands."
That same summer, the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation swimming and diving championships were held at the pool. Over a period of two days, 700 swimmers met from 20 teams. Parents, officials, and spectators swarmed the Municipal Complex for the event.
Due to damage over time, the structure was "renovated" with the first phase of demolition beginning in late 1992. Construction began in February of 1993 and the pool was open for business that summer.
The new brick bathhouse and office replaced the former wooden buildings. The pergola and fencing were also replaced, and the resulting design was more open and less secluded.
"A new gutter and filtration system was installed as well as decking, a toddler's pool, furniture, and underwater pool lights."
"The pool will keep the southwest flavor pattern originally created by O'Neil Ford."
